It was a terrible and frightening start in life for two six week old kittens found in a ditch by our neighbours while biking. Their rescue was completed with one going to a farm, and the other into our home, already occupied by a 110 lb. Great Pyrenees.
The contrast in size was hilarious but the kitten was not intimidated. That's when we decided he deserved the name, Hercules, despite the fact he could fit inside a soup cup.
He soon grew to an impressive size, at one point, reaching 17 lbs. with a bold independent character that ruled the household. He liked to play rough and would draw blood if provoked beyond his tolerance. He also had a gentle side and was very vocal at mealtime. Sharing breakfast time with Mom was his favourite time.
He travelled well without complaint, enduring ten hours in his carrier without food, water, or bathroom breaks during 13 long distance trips south for the winter.
The years flew by and after failing health, we had to face that awful decision to end his suffering. He was 18 1/2 years old. We will miss him dearly.
